Old man: How are you going to live without me?
Old woman: “You should die when I do. There.”
Old man: “I do wish I could. Really.”
Chunsik and Sunok have grey hair.
They were together for a very long time but they know they will part soon. If they part in winter, when was their spring? Chunsik and Sunok set out on a trip through the loving memories of their years together. They come to realize that all the pain and sorrow they overcome together turned out to be love after all.
Performance Characteristics
- Time travel in reverse order
Beautiful Life is set in the home of an old couple.
Winter refers to the final chapter of life and shows the calm but sad husband who has to leave his disabled wife. Summer depicts the couple in their 40’s and describes the wife's painful discovery of her disability and her having to deal with her unsophisticated husband. In spring, the couple is in their 20’s. They meet again after having broken up due to some misunderstandings and they start sharing some time together. The time reverses as the old couple walks down memory lane and recaps the events of their past. Their minds and emotions change as events unfold on stage.
- Nostalgic songs of the past
Background music is from a time in the past. Middle aged couples in the audience will get nostalgic over their own past as songs from those years are played. Beautiful Life will be a refreshing touch for middle aged couples who consider stage plays a culture geared towards younger people.
About Romance – Choi Baek-ho
Nagging – Kim Gun-mo
Back to You, Again – Byun Jin-seob
The Tea House of That Winter – Cho Yong-pil
Beautiful Life, a relatable stage play that sets the direction
Beautiful Life was chosen as the #1 stage play by married couples as it tells a story of a long-time couple who experience various emotions -- watching over me and helping me through my disabilities. This is not a situation every couple goes through but the events are ordinary and general enough that the audience nods their heads and can relate. The audience will ask themselves whether they will choose the same person as their spouses again if they could go back in time, after everything they have been through and after all the love and agony. For younger audiences, this content will be a healing at a time when provocative content is flooding media. This is an ordinary story that could be considered somewhat boring, but it develops with the love and agony of life shared together. We hope that everyone, not only the adults but also the teenagers, can understand love and can feel their lives filled with beauty after watching Beautiful Life
