Synopsis

Sister Maria receives a letter from her father asking her to burn the letters hidden in his room. All the letters are from a mystery man named Kepler.
The year is 1598 when people believed that the sun revolves around the earth. Galileo, a mathematician and college professor in Italy receives a book titled "The Mystery of the Universe" and a proposal to jointly study the universe from Kepler, a mathematician in Germany.
Galileo instantly turned down the offer at first. However, he could not but accept the proposal at Kepler’s persistent persuasion. Galileo studies Kepler’s hypothesis only to prove him wrong. Then one day Galileo concludes that Kepler’s preposterous hypothesis could work if it was based on the heliocentric theory strictly prohibited from being mentioned.

Performance Characteristics

Messengers of the stars chasing the value of truth. In August, we meet the stars in the audience! The performance was first staged at the 2017 AKAMA (ARKO-KARTS Musical Theatre Writing Academy) reading session. It was developed through the Black and Blue Season 4 at the Chungmu Arts Center and took two years of preparation. Sidereus is back on-stage after last year’s debut! Sidereus was acclaimed by critics and by audiences. Good reviews include, “A splendid trinity of stage, lighting, and video.”; “It felt as if we were in space.”; “The performance gives one the courage to tell what one witnessed as the truth while everyone believed it to be false.”
A story beginning from Kepler’s letters sent to Galileo Sidereus is an original musical of historic people and events restructured with the writer’s imagination. The story begins with Kepler’s letters sent to Galileo. The two scholars start to study heliocentric theory which was strictly prohibited in the 17th century. The two scholars’ journey of pursuing the truth presents the audience with the hope and consolation that “one can go forward only when one faces the truth.” Sister Maria, the daughter of Galileo, represents the danger of studying heliocentric theory during chaotic times, when facts held as truth by the people could not be further from the truth.
