The story takes place during Yeonsangun’s reign (1494-1506) in the Joseon dynasty. Jang Noksu, born to a peasant family, is picked by Jeandaegun (a prince) for her artistic talent and beauty. She becomes a ginyeo (a female entertainer for aristocrats) at Gaheungcheong where all ginyeos selected from across the country stay before they are called to the royal court. Jeandaegun who loves arts and entertainment teaches Jang Noksu everything he knows, and she quickly masters all the artistic skills and techniques, becoming one of the most sought-after ginyeo. She soon becomes a royal concubine. Jang Noksu tries to seize and maintain political power by constantly reminding the king of his complex, the unpleasant past of his loyal subjects and even making ill use of Jeandaegun’s faithfulness. The king’s subjects slowly plot to stand up to Jang Noksu. One day, while Jang Noksu and the king enjoy some leisurely time out on a boat, they are told that rebel forces are on their way to the royal palace...
