The ups and downs of a countryside rickshaw puller’s miserable life, and his move to Beiping (today’s Beijing).
To the poor, yet faithful rickshaw boy, the rickshaw is his everything. He even changed his birthday to match the
date when he first got the rickshaw.
Nonetheless, the rickshaw boy’s life continues to fall into a bottomless pit: a merciless war, a chaotic society, and exploitation by capitalists. Rickshaw pullers in early 20th century China and the low-income class of the 4th industrial revolution seem to lead parallel lives.
<Camel Xiangzi> is a theatrical interpretation of Lao She’s <Rickshaw Boy>, a bestselling novel in China and the US, produced by Goh Seon-woong. With no clear distinction in space and time on stage, the play realistically recreates the brutal exploitations and horrors suffered by the lower classes in the early 20th century by temperately illustrating the raging life of a rickshaw boy.
