“The world and its bright days
are never mine and never ours.
The only thing left to us is a brush.
We painted our bright days with black brush strokes.”
The story takes place at Injeongjeon Hall in Changdeokgung Palace in the 10th year (AD 1618) of Gwanghaegun's reign, the fifteenth king of the Joseon dynasty.
Heo Gyun (a prominent writer of the Joseon dynasty and author of “The Story of Hong Gildong”, the first novel written in Hangeul (Korean alphabet)) was brought to the royal court to be interrogated for treason. He was accused of putting anonymous inflammatory letters on the walls of the capital and of plotting high treason against the king. Despite the unbearable torture, he pleaded innocent. He even sternly scolded his slanderers for treason.
However, others finally gave in and falsely confessed that Gyun was the leader of the rebel forces. On the eve of Gyun's execution, he had a visit from his teacher Lee Dal, who taught him and his sister Heo Chohui to write and appreciate poems. When faced with Lee Dal, Heo Gyun cried out and asked why the teacher had abandoned them long ago.
Instead of answering, Lee Dal reminisced about the nights when they gathered together to create art and he talked about the poet, Heo Chohui, whom the two men deeply loved and admired...
The highly competent creative team revived the “poems” of Heo Chohui.
